Roll the die. Hop along the road. Land on an escalator and ride it up — land on a slide and whoosh, all the way down.

HexLadders is a race to the top of a winding hex board for one to six players, made for children aged four to eight. There is nothing to read and nothing to work out: tap the die, watch your piece go, and cheer (or groan) at whatever the board does next.

Watch out near the top. There is always a slide waiting just before home.

iPad From launch: the grown-up question in front of the purchase, the unlock, and a game of VORTEX.

Every board is new

The first board is the same for everybody, so a first game is a gentle one. After that the road, the escalators and the slides are built fresh every time you play — and every board is checked before you see it, so the road never tangles, escalators always go up, slides always come down, and no game drags on forever.

Six worlds to climb

Each world has six boards, and the boards change shape and grow as you go. Finish a board to open the next one — the die decides who wins, but nobody gets stuck behind a bad roll.

Up to six players on one tablet

Pass it round the table, or fill the empty seats with the tablet’s own players and race them.

Nothing to read

Every button is a picture, every tap target is big enough for a small finger, and it plays in portrait or landscape. It saves itself after every turn, so a game can be put down and picked up later.

The plain facts

What it costs
The free game is the whole first world, small and medium quick games, and up to two people at the table — a complete game, not a demo. One payment opens all six worlds, the large and huge boards and three to six players, once, for good, on every device signed in to the same account. The buy button sits behind a question only a grown-up can answer. No adverts of any kind, ever.
Who it is for
Children aged four to eight, and whoever is sitting next to them.
What it collects
Nothing. It runs entirely offline, with no accounts and no network play of any kind. The only things it keeps are the game in progress, how far you have climbed, and whether the unlock was bought — all on the device. Read the privacy policy that covers this title.
